30 Posts In 30 Days – Day 22: Advice
This is Day 22 of the 30 Posts In 30 Days Challenge I set for myself to start writing online. This post was originally published on X.
There are a few things I wish I had known back when I started working for myself.
Here are 5 pieces of advice I would give my younger self if I had to start over again:
1. Don’t quit your job
Try to transition into working for yourself, instead of quitting your job right away.
See if you can reduce to working 4 instead of 5 days a week at your current job.
If that’s not an option, you’ll have to make time for projects after work or on the weekends.
Of course, this won’t be easy, but it will only be temporary.
2. Find your WHY
It’s a cliché because it’s true.
Ask yourself why you want to change from working for a business to becoming a business yourself.
Are you seeking creative freedom, better work-life balance, or financial independence?
Or maybe something else entirely?
Knowing your WHY will be your guide on this journey and help you stay on course, even during the tougher times.
3. Know your numbers
Before taking the leap, have a clear understanding of your financial situation.
- How much do you need to make?
- How much do you want to make?
- Do you have any savings?
- How long can you go without getting paid?
In short, collect all the information you can.
This will help you plan effectively, avoid financial stress, and make informed decisions.
Especially in the beginning.
4. Get your first paid clients
People will pay for your services if they see value in what you have to offer.
That’s the only way to tell if and when you should transition from being employed to working for yourself.
Try to find a few paying clients other than your friends and family.
Look at money as a neutral indicator of value.
5. Teach what you know
Start by instructing your clients and tell them exactly what you need from them and what they get in return.
Write down what you learn for every project you work on and every problem you solve.
Publish your thoughts, insights, and ideas on a blog or on a writing platform like X.
And with time you will attract people who want to work with or learn from you.
