30 Posts In 30 Days – Day 21: Working For Myself
This is Day 21 of the 30 Posts In 30 Days Challenge I set for myself to start writing online. This post was originally published on X.
Starting to work for myself has been one of the best decisions of my life.
I’ve had my fair share of struggles to make it work (no pun intended). Especially at the beginning of my career.
But after my first year, I already knew I could never return to a normal job again.
Unlimited growth
Making more money or becoming “the best” in my field, isn’t exactly what “growth” means to me.
I want to keep things small and simple while learning new things that interest me.
If I stay in the same place for too long, I start to feel stagnant and lost.
And so I’m constantly looking for new ways to challenge myself, as opportunities to grow.
Working for myself allows me to do exactly that, at my own pace.
Autonomy and control
I’m able to work where I like, when I like, on what I like, and with whom I like.
I’m in a place now where I’m able to say “No” to a lot of things.
- No to spending an hour or more on commuting.
- No to working from 9 to 5.
- No to clients or projects I don’t feel good about.
- No to working on somebody else’s dream.
It took a while to get here and I am grateful for every lesson I learned along the way.
Financial Independence
For a long time, my feeling of security depended on how much money I earned.
“If I could just make 100k a year or 10k a month, I would be fine.”
With time I learned that it never was about the number but instead about the “How”.
One way or another, I will always be dependent on money.
But I can now rely on the skills and experience I’ve built over the years to make an income.
