30 Posts In 30 Days – Day 19: Interesting

This is Day 19 of the 30 Posts In 30 Days Challenge I set for myself to start writing online. This post was originally published on X.

Everyone loves talking about themselves.

If you’ve been on any social media platform lately, all you read is “my goals”, “my dreams”, “my business”, “my journey”.

Me, me, me. My, my, my.

And I’ve been guilty of this myself.

There’s nothing wrong with talking or writing about yourself.

That’s what your bio, your feed, and your blog are here for.

Your experiences, your take on things, and your view of the world, in your own words, make you stand out from others.

The problem is, that everybody is so busy living in their own world.

What makes you “you” isn’t interesting enough to make them look up every once in a while.

If you want to be interesting, be interested.

Show interest in what other people have to say.

Support them. Buy from them.

Talk about their ideas, about their struggles, about their business.

Everyone loves talking about themselves.

And then eventually, when they ask you “Oh, what do you do for a living?” it is time to talk about you.

“I make websites.”

Who’s the first person they think about now, when they need a web designer?

You.

You didn’t tell them once, you didn’t give them your business card, you didn’t write them a cold email.

You made an impression by caring about them.

But make no mistake.

This isn’t a sleazy sales tactic or marketing trick.

This is “how to have a normal conversation”. Like a normal human being.

If every conversation you start in the real world is about yourself, you will annoy and bore people.

They will lose interest.

The same is true for having a conversation online.

  • You can’t fake it.
  • You have to mean it.
  • You have to be genuine.

That’s the key.

If you’re just nice and kind with the expectation to make a sale down the road, that’s not going to work.

People will notice. One way or another.

Put your ego aside for a moment and make it about others.
