30 Posts In 30 Days – Day 18: Writer’s Block
This is Day 18 of the 30 Posts In 30 Days Challenge I set for myself to start writing online. This post was originally published on X.
Sometimes writing, or creating in general, can feel really overwhelming.
The longer I stare at a blank page, the less likely I’m going to write. And with time I’ve developed some tactics for this exact situation.
Here are 10 things I do to deal with writer’s block:
- Taking a nap
- Reading a book
- Going for a walk
- Doing the dishes
- Taking a deep breath
- Drinking a glass of water
- Looking for inspiration online
- Playing one of my instruments
- Pouring myself a cup of tea or coffee
- Reading long posts on X to pass the time
If you made it this far, you probably know where this is going.
No? Read on.
Most of these things aren’t inherently bad.
The problem is, they are getting in the way of me doing my work.
I can spend hours on something that feels good or productive.
Or maybe even take care of another task on my to-do list.
But no matter what I do, there’s no way around facing the same, simple truth. Yet again.
The page is still blank. And I haven’t written a single word yet.
What I should do instead is, well, write something.
Anything.
It can be as simple as writing down my thoughts, asking myself how I feel or what I’d rather be doing now instead.
Again. Everything is allowed.
Anything is better than a blank page.
I’m the warrior, the pen is my sword. And I use it to stab Resistance right into the face.
See?
The trick is, to get the writing going.
As quickly as possible.
More words will follow and ideas will start to form.
And if not, before you know it you’ll have written a full post about the things you do when you don’t feel like doing the work.
Don’t be like me.

Sit down and start writing.
Right now.
