30 Posts In 30 Days – Day 12: Reinvent Your Life

This is Day 12 of the 30 Posts In 30 Days Challenge I set for myself to start writing online. This post was originally published on X.

What would you do with 100,000 $?

My girlfriend asked me this question the other day. At first sight, it seemed like a lot of money.

But then I realized, I really had to think about it.

Compared to, let’s say one million, my options are already limited. And even that amount is gone faster than most of us can imagine.

It is barely enough to afford a house (at least where I live).

But I could still buy something big like a fancy car or new equipment for my music studio.

But is this really how I could make the most of it?

At this point, my girlfriend probably regretted asking me such a question.

I couldn’t let go of it and had to dig deeper.

And so I came up with the following answer.

The one thing that would give me the most value right now is time.

I know what you’re thinking…

“We all have the same 24 hours, you’re just not using it properly”, blah, blah, blah.

But hear me out. I’m onto something.

100k would be enough to pay my bills for two whole years. Three if I’m trying to be very resourceful (no luxury like traveling).

I would invest that time into focusing on the ONE thing I wanted to do for so long.

I would try to build a business out of my side project.

So basically what I’m already doing. But with much more focus and less worrying about making an income.

This made me think even more.

(Stay with me. I’m getting there, I promise.)

How long does it take to build a business from scratch?

I don’t know, even though I’ve done it before, offering my services as a web designer and developer.

It didn’t take long until I made my first $. But it took a while until I made enough from month to month.

But it definitely didn’t take me more than a year. More like 6 months.

Let’s assume that 6 months, is enough to start a new business.

What’s the prize for 6 months of time?

You tell me.

How much money do you spend on a monthly basis?

Do the math. Most likely it’s much less than 100k.

How long would you have to work to save enough money to go 6 months without an income?

Of course, this isn’t just a question of time or money.

As always, there’s more to it.

Maybe you can’t just quit your job and expect to get it back after 6 months, in case your business fails.

But it’s an interesting thought experiment anyway.

Maybe the opportunity you’ve been waiting for isn’t so far out of reach after all?

Maybe 6 months is all you need to reinvent your life.
