30 Posts In 30 Days – Day 10: Construction Worker

This is Day 1 of the 30 Posts In 30 Days Challenge I set for myself to start writing online. This post was originally published on X.

Sometimes I wish I was a construction worker.

Maybe it is because there is one outside my window right now. He’s doing the groundwork for the house of our future neighbors. With surprising precision.

But maybe it’s because some days I feel like I don’t have a whole lot to show for the effort and hours I put into my work.

Oh, how I would love to drive an excavator myself right now. Digging holes all day long.

Some days I work on a proposal for hours, sending emails back and forth.
Only to have my offer rejected in the end.

Some days I try to fix a bug in my software.
And when I finally manage to do so, all I have to show for is “working as intended”.

Some days I spend hours on the first draft of a new design.
Just to discard it and jump right to draft number two.

Some days I feel like I haven’t made a lot of progress on any of my projects.
And that can feel very frustrating.

Some days I’d much rather be digging holes or building houses.

But everything has its pros and cons.

I realize this is a typical “the grass is greener on the other side” situation.

Today I’m just glad I didn’t have to go out in the rain to do my work.
